Posted - 05/05/2009 : 14:18:15 There was a good turnout on top of Reigate Hill with a great view over the Weald, on a good day to start another year of rough-stuff. This started immediately as cafe lies right on the North Downs Way long distance path, at that point cycling friendly, but after a few miles westward it become a footpath so it was the great drop off the downs to Dorking road at Reigate Heath. Next was a good dose of heathland tracks passing a too-early-for-lunch pub before a succession of superb lanes to a great group table at the Dolphin at Betchworth.
A different route, mainly rough-stuff, led back to Reigate Heath where, passing close to the Golf clubhouse, we offered entry to the windmill. Surprise, surprise, the lower floor had been recycled as a church!
Then it was back to the Reigate/ Dorking road and the steep climb up the scarp of the North Downs, sliding on mud and chalk to the hilltop cafe for tea.
Near the finish, and the end of group a man walking said "How nice to see alot of non-mountain bikes." Maybe I am not a dinosaur after all.
